Hi, my name is Jonah David Whisenhunt. For more than 13 years, I have developed a reputation among fans and peers as a constantly learning and developing drummer. I have the honor of doing so from great teachers and playing with local and national legends.
But these honors, in addition to many more bestowed by the The Atlanta Institute of Music, are the product of undying commitment to making great compositions. I work every day to become incredibly dynamic and diverse. I wish to inspire musicians worldwide, and build on a solid foundation of knowledge and respect for all music.
Born in Atlanta Georgia, May 1st, 1986. I am thankful to have a very supportive family. I started playing drums around the age of 10, and received my first actual drum set on my 13th birthday. During my Jr. high school years, I studied concert snare at public schools. We were very organized. It was there that I began developing good practice ethics ( forced upon me by those pesky instructors) that continued into high school. I am forever thankful to the patience of my instructors for their many hours spent teaching a boy of ten how to hold his sticks.
At the age 13, I began to work with local rock and metal guys. Some years later, in 2006, I began work with a group called Dead to the World (Ricky Mathis, Chris Crutchfield, Scott Ellis, Jon Lansburg, and myself). Engaging the local club scene in Atlanta, I have enjoyed playing the gamete of local bars and clubs. Dead to the World has played with many incredible acts over the years including GWAR, Black Dahlia Murder, Sworn Enemy, Veil of Maya, All Shall Perish, Kitty, and has headlined local shows too many times to count. We showcased at the cutting-edge musicians invite, the Atlantis Music Conference: we love playing festivals. From this group, vocalist and record engineer Ricky Mathis, is set to record full production on the fourth record set to release in June, 2012.
As an independent musician, I have grown steadily over the years. In 2009, I decided to study music at the Atlanta Institute of Music (2009-2012), with such greats as Craig Harbor, Tom Night, Gary, Randy Hoaxer, Jack Jones and Carl Culpepper. As a student, un-paralleled opportunities are given daily to network and play alongside some of the most talented musicians that Atlanta has to offer.
A constant student of the art of drumming and music, I wish to give back every chance I get through the power of teaching and constant learning.
Between all the writing, recording, learning, rehearsing, and working with students, I might tear up the highway every now and then on my 2004 Yamaha R6 Raven, or go backpacking in the Rocky Mountains. I love enjoying a glass of Georgia wine, or laughing with family and friends. So, cheers to every person who has inspired, or has been inspired, by the people who have dedicated their lives to bringing music to life.
